More than 70% of Karate Ontario members are children under 14 years of age. Our commitment to enriching lives of young people through safe and fun-filled karate sport has been expanded to care for sick ones also for the third year in the row. The Chung family has been donating toys to Hospital for Sick Kids for number of years. They have again donated toys to sick children in the amount larger than $ 1,000! We are very glad to have this opportunity to join in and contribute to the “Sick Kids Foundation” the amount of $1000 for the “Child Life Toy and Game fund”.

Ontario SYL Apps Volunteer Achievement Awards!

SUDBURY KARATE INSTRUCTOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS ONTARIO AWARD

TORONTO, ON - In a world where actions speak louder than words, 61-year-old Shihan Don Benoit, a 6th Degree Karate Black Belt, is a living legend. And, on Thursday night, he was honoured at a sold-out banquet in Toronto for his commitment to excellence with a prestigious Syl Apps Award for Volunteerism in Amateur Sport.

Mr. Benoit is the Chief Instructor of Benoit’s Martial Arts in Sudbury and has been active in the Karate community since the mid-1970’s. He started his own dojo in 1981. Over the years, he has trained thousands of students in Karate while stressing the need to be respectful, hard-working, and good, productive citizens. On the competitive side of the martial art, Shihan Benoit has been instrumental in developing many top athletes who have won provincial, national, and world titles.

“This is an incredible honour,” says Shihan Benoit, “It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 40-years in Karate. We don’t get involved in the martial arts for accolades or awards. So, I accepted this award with great pride and humility on behalf of all of the instructors and students who have joined me over four decades.”

Beyond competitive success, Mr. Benoit has been a great supporter and also officiates himself at various Karate Ontario tournaments and clinics. During the 2010 Ontario Summer Youth Games in Sudbury, Mr. Benoit provided volunteers and officials to help the Games run more smoothly – and also acted as a Major Official during the games for Karate. He has also been a National Official representing Karate Ontario.

“Shihan Don Benoit is one of Karate’s biggest promoters and supporters,” says Craig Vokey, the Vice President of Karate Ontario, “His volunteerism to the martial arts and his undying commitment to his community are unmatched. His professionalism and his humble demeanour make him a role model for many, including myself. I don’t even think he truly understands how many lives he has positively impacted over the years.”

The Syl Apps award is presented by the 2010 Ontario Sports Awards and is sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.

Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC)

Sensei Ken BensonSensei Ken Benson has been granted Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) status by Coaches of Canada. This designation is conferred upon coaches who have graduated from NCCP Level 4 and have demonstrated continued updating to their coaching education while contributing to their sport at a high level. Ken is the first karate coach to receive this.

Coaches of Canada works in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee, Athletics Canada, and the Coaching Association of Canada, and is the only organization that grants official designations in the field of coaching in this country.

“I thank Ontario Senseis Timothy Suzuki and Brad Jones, who blazed a trail for karate coaches to achieve NCCP Level 4. I also thank all the great people in Karate Ontario who have been supportive when I’ve picked their brains about karate issues. I hope that, in 10 years, we have a dozen karate ChPC’s as we move up in the Canadian amateur sport realm”.

Ken would be happy to talk to any Karate Ontario club coach who is interested in NCCP certification.
